Why would a knock sensor fault code only come on when engine bays hot?

Default Why would a knock sensor fault code only come on when engine bays hot?

Hi guys basically when cars warmed up and sitting still or in traffic etc the light comes on, out on open road with plenty of cool air cooling engine bay the light stays off ? any one got ne ideas? when i say light i mean ECL

Have you checked the connection to the sender? Mine had a dodgy connection and threw up the CEL at seemingly random times.

loose connection, broken wire or the sensor is failing would be my first guess.

I had very similar problems on a classic MY99. When I measured its impedance it was too high. I purchased a replacement non-oem sensor (supposedly identical, measured impedance was now correct) and ended up with similar problems. Returned it a while later and got a proper subaru sensor. This time it worked, and has never thrown the code. I'd recommend the proper Subaru replacement sensor, torqued to the correct value as I was having problems for ages with mine!

ok mate nice one, where did you purchase your sensor from please? and do you know what they need to be torqued to? how hard are they to get at with out removing inlet manifold ?

IIRC it's easy enough to get to with the intercooler off, no need the remove the inlet.

i changed the knock sensor, then re set ecu by taking negative off the battery for 20 mins, and was fine after his mate.
