Pinned engine or CDB?? For EJ257 running roughly 450/500bhp

Have a semi CDB at the moment and just wondering what will be better for it, thanks in advance

Well a CDB is better but at what cost?
The best you would ever get (considering you already have a 2.5) is CDB with that, if you wanted to change then a 2.33/2.35 cdb is better still, just hard to get hold of the 2.2's.

Thanks Tony, no deffo want to keep the 2.5 just want to make it stronger. Heard all sorts about pinning etc and wasnt sure what would be better! What do you mean at what cost?

Cdb will be better but I've not seen prices on the inserts yet to do this. Pinning seems to cost from £400 upwards, also probably worth getting a head stud conversion done at the same time

Hi Kirstie

Try contact the Alyn@AS Performance about the pinning your block or making something like from your block CDB,not sure onprice, but i would contact Alyn,i'm sure he will help you out with this

About the making stronger,as Chris suggest 12mm or 14mm head stud will be needed at this level, plus good pistons/rods combo as many people suggest on your other thread

But if budget allows,EJ22T will be mine choice

What ever way you go with a 2.5 block, it still does'nt get over the thin liner walls of the 99.5mm block, they won't stand high cyl pressures for any length of time, all the pinning / closed decking will help reduce is head gasket issues.

I wish people paid me £400 for pinning.

depends, on if its 450 or 500, 450 ej257, 500 then cdb.

500 is upper limit of the 2.5 so depends how much of a risk you wanna take, 450bhp will be alot of power in a classic though.

Also depends on budget SC 450 is a crackign package for 450bhp

All 2.5 blocks are the same liner wall thickness, weather open deck, or semi closed ej257, pinning or a full insert won't strengthen them, all it does is hold the top of the bore better against movement between head & block, hence the gaskets last longer at higher power levels.

can't get round the weakness of the block, unless you have major engineering work done lol. I know some folks do push to 500 and get away wth it, but then i know a few who havn't, wouldn;t wanna go to 500 myself

Yes your right 500 on a 2.5 block would'nt be my base block choice.

at 450 makes a cracking road car with the extra low down torque grunt

if your going for 450 then your 2.5 should be fine, so long as your running decent internals. As said before, 500 is on the limit. A 450 2.5 would make a very fast road car though

Yep, would think Stockcar can advise. He pinned and CDB'd Andy F's flat six blocks.

Honestly it will be more like 450, but good for 500 if that makes sense. Didnt want it pushing its limits! My injectors will max out before i hit 500bhp so im aiming for 450 which is more than enough for me! Thanks for all the advise, being in the ford scene for years and relitively new to the Scooby scene its handy to have somewhere to ask these things

How much do you charge for pinning then? When I looked into it a few places were asking this much

Can the block be re-lined with stronger liners or thicker liners or would this be too expensive to bother?
