Default Loud backfires and poor tickover?

Morning,

The past few weeks my Subaru has been doing some really quite loud backfires, usually going from 1st to 2nd or from 2nd to 3rd. The car quite often gives a little pop on gear change, but they have definitely got louder the past couple of weeks.. Obviously something isn't right? It does have a VTA DV (Im not a chav, will be removed when funds permit a recirc), so I know that will make it pop and fart a bit, but it's definitely a lot louder?

Also, I haven't driven the car for a week, but I got it out of thw garage last night and left it idling for 10 minutes, and it didn't seem to idle as smooth as it used to? It seemed to have a bit of a miss just on idle?

Could these be linked, I was thinking maybe MAF? I know the idle could be with sitting for a week, but I dont think it is..

Many thanks,
Steve.

It'll be a faulty MAF mate common problem, but check for air leaks aswell.

Yeah I know that the DV is crap, and that it makes them pop a little, but the popping definitely got a lot louder a week or two ago..

Im pretty confident theres no air leaks, doesnt feel like that sort if problem.. If the MAF is faulty will it do any harm until I get one?

Cheers!

I bought a classic which have a baileys atmospheric and the idle was rubbish and it popped and banged to the moon and back!

it could be the maf, but id start with the DV! as i said, your fighting a losing battle otherwise!

And if its running rough, dont boost too high or ask for too much torque just in case ... if it runs lean as a result of the maf then it could be conrod fon doo time!
