any 94-98 engine will fit. Later facelift cars have a different inlet bolt pattern.

Early WRX cars have closed deck blocks but ideally look for a uk 97 engine or car breaking for a no hassle swap

Yeah as previously stated I would be looking at a pre-facelift engine so you know it drops right in.

If you go for an sti or wrx I believe you will need the ecu for that engine?? Need confirmed.

Iv been told that v1 to v4 have the same inlet manifold stud pattern (ie any 93 to 98 engine will fit) but your have to use your inlet manifold ,turbo and pipes, maf ect in order to match up with your loom .easiest way would be to source a complete MY.97/98 engine as you'd just have to bolt your turbo maf ect if you don't fancy changing inlet manifolds
