HELP ME SPEC MY ENGINE

HELP ME SPEC MY ENGINE
the headgasket went on my '98 type r so i took the motor out, found 2 big end bearings had failed (almost in the same place on No. 1 & 2 - weird!) and scored the crank, the rods may be re-usable but i want to bin it all and go for a new crank, rods and pistons.... the problem I have is deciding which parts to use, there's so many options available, every tuner seams to be biased towards x or y brand, but whats the best?
i want the bottom end to be capable of running 500bhp safely
i have seen loads of different stroker kits about, the cosworth 2.2 is my favoured at the moment, but i think thats just because i like the brand and you dont see or hear of many people using them, which i like! one thing i am unsure about with this kit is if i'd need to modify the thrust bearing location, (like the ej25 crank mod) and also how much abuse/power it can handle
talking to people i believe the open deck blocks will do the job, so they're being crack tested soon, fingers crossed they're ok!
looks forward to reading responses
cheers

Hi there
With right specs Open deck block(ODB) will handle 500bhp safely and above(i would say 550bhp as maximum),above OBD must be pinned or sleeved
About the parts, stroker kits are best buy like from different companies:Lateral Performance is good one,Advance automotive is good too,Cosworth pricey.
But i would contact several builders from here like EngineTuner or Finch Motorsport which can build your engine with right specs and which will hold this power for sure
I would say for safe 500bhp i would go with Cosworth pistons,Manley Rods will be OK(Cosworth rods should be best, but at this level i would say is overkill),ACL bearing set,EJ257 crank and 12mm ARP headstud

Hi Tom
I know people who have done it with no probs but if your pumping your money into an engine I would'nt advise to go with the open deck block.
Yes you are correct if you go with the cosworth 2.2 kit you will need to convert to rear thrust, if you find a semi c.d.b then you have rear thrust block and the added strength around cylinders. Or better go C.D.B (no probs to convert blocks to rear thrust).
What is the engine going to be used for?
All the best with project.

go to cdb if you are building a new engine whats anther £300.use 14mm head studs and cosworth pistons rods .it may be over kill .but if you change your mined and go for more power later all the work has been done. so it will be cheaper in the long run .if you dont go for more power it should be running pretty safe

thanks for the replies guys
oh yea, i want to build this myself too, not only to save a few quid, but so that i learn and understand whats going on
forgot to say i have a gtx3076r that i'd like to use which is good for 450-500
if i was to go down the CDB, cossies internals, 14mm headstuds i'd have a 600+ capable bottom end which is abit overkill tbh
so far my parts list is looking something like this:
stroker kit with race spec bearings
block machined to suit crank or scd
ARP headstuds
gasket kit, sealant
cossie hg's
uprated oil and water pumps
am i overlooking anything expensive?
cheers
