Smile ECU Reflash for WRX STI 2000-2002 (complete newbie)

Hi,
I am a complete newbie and I was wondering if I can reflash an ECU for a WRX STI V7 (2000-2002) which I am looking to buy pretty soon.

The problems:
I dont know anything abour reflashing.
I dont know the step by step process of reflashing
I want something that will provide slightly more power and using slightly less fuel (if possible)
I dont know what gear I need to have. (Preferably cheap)
I dont know the consequences and risks.

Would anyone be kind enough to help me out here?

Also I was reading a bit and there is a "MAP" I need to upload on my ECU if I am not wrong. Does anyone have a configured map already that I can use?
The car will have everything stock.

Sorry if I got the terminology wrong.

Cheers guys

Cheers for that. What is the difference between re-flash and re-map?
Also can anyone get me a MAP for the V7 STIs?

you could buy a ecu that has been mapped but i would advise against it
you should have a specific map done for your vehicle
do you not have any scooby forums over there try searching google for local mappers

re-flash and re-map are the same thing..............

the two types are either generic (someone uploads the map to your ECU) or custom (where the mapper sits in the car and alters the map over a period of time to suit the car exactly).

The custom map usually gives better performance.

Search for EcuTeK or OpenSource mapping in your area.

As you are in Aus get in touch with;
http://www.airpowersystems.com
They are a Australian company that do a lot of good stuff for Scoobies. Hence I have a APS 3.5 inch exhaust, a APS inlet pipe and a APS parallel fuel system. You also have MRT think it is Midland Race Tuning, whoi I got my Front Mounted Intercooler off. There are also a number (think they are on number 3) Subaru tuning books originating from, Australia (think they are on the MRT website (http://www.mrtperformance.com.au). So you do not have to look outside your country for some great products

If you are in Aus , rather go to any of the MRT dealers.

They give awesome advice and it is free.

Hi guys, I am New Zealand not Aus, but would really want to know what gear I would need if I was to reflash it myself because someone is going to give me the MAP according to the mods but sadly hes overseas.

to flash a map to your ecu you will need a Tactrix cable, Laptop and 2 pairs of spade connectors for the jumpers under the dash,
The MAP someone has overseas is very risky, is it even for the same fuel as you use ?

Oh Yeap he has mapped STI's from Aus and NZ and he has been in the business for 10 years or so. STI's imported to NZ are from JDM. Yes he is aware of the fuel etc that I am going to use.

I am going to use ROMRaider etc and send him the information and I believe he is going to have a look at it then have a look at my mods and then modify it and send it back. All I have to do is just flash it.

Can you chuck a me a link of the tactrix cable please?

Is your google broken?
I use Romraider and a tactrix 2.0 unit, coming from a little tuning knowledge to now understanding pretty much everything I need to be aware off when tweaking. Car is running great and I can make adjustments as and when I want, rather than paying someone else to do it.
