Well it would help if we knew where the smoke was coming from: out of the exhaust, from the engine?

Could be valve stem oil seals, or rings.

It would be worse from cold if the above had gone, what color smoke is it ? blue, white or black, dont confuse the the white and blue as they look simlar to the untrained eye.

if its white smoke mate that means its water, dont panic it could be one of 2 things, first is the coolant is going through the system (head gasket gone) the second and the more probable one imho is its moisture in the exhaust, when you give the car a good spirited run it will heat the exhaust up to the point where the water will evapourate ie white smoke,
i hope this helps and good luck

i`m not absolutely sure on this but i belive unburnt oil can give off white smoke, ie oil that is leaking from the turbo on the xhaust side, yes its got hot and created smoke but it hasnt actually been burnt as in through the engine.

i doubt what addi has said above is correct in this case, ie the weather is very hot and you usually get condensation burn off for say 10 mins after cold start,

also i think stem seals does as you have described.

ahhh blue, it is hard to tell as its only a very slight tint of blue but blue is oil, after a hard run it may well be the turbo seals are on there way out the above post was the only 2 reasons i could think of for white smoke with the circumstances you gave

as above sometimes hard to tell if its blue or white, looks like turbo off , check intercooler for oil first.

ok thanks for the replies its looking like something to do with the turbo,if i give it a bit of a run and take a look around the turbo will there be any obvious signs or would it only smoke from out the exhaust?

if you upgrade you will need a remap fella, tdo4's are going for £50 on flea bay so its not too bad of a fix.
