I'm trying to strip down some shocks I bought, I want to remove the springs from the struts.
I'm struggling with removing the top mounts, since the nut with the allen head in the middle is in a deep recess. I've tried putting a socket over the nut and trying to hold it with a pair of vice grips then sticking an allen key in through the socket.
However, this isn't working and no matter how tight I clamp the socket it slips.
Any tips?
* I am using spring compressors before any warns me

You need to grind two flats on the socket to suit an open ended spanner. I held allen key in a vice as I could not get much leverage on it.

I don't have access to an air gun, anyone in the west midlands fancy helping a fellow SN member?
I'll give the other suggestions a go first though, my neighbor may have some better tools. (I know he doesn't have air tools though, damn)
