Default Slight problem any ideas?

I got my w reg 2.0 sport last week and at some point a previous owner has ripped out the airbox and pipes and fitted a cone filter and stuck little pipercross filters on three pipes, two if them i can see being crank breathers, not sure what the third one is. I have bought secondhand an airbox and pipes to put back to original and am waiting for it to be delivered. In the meantime I notice if i throttle slowly the car pulls fine but if i quickly put my foot down the cars not happy and wont pull, I have replaced fuel filter, oil filter, oil, HT leads and plugs.

I hate cone filters and know they are not good for cars, would I be right in thinking its this setup of all these filters that could be causing the fault or is there something else on these engines that could be causing it? I have worked on alot of different engines but never a subaru one.

Could be the new induction kit is throttling the car?
Or that it's damaged the MAF........do Sports HAVE MAf's?

The induction kit is what i'm thinking, um havent checked but i'm sure it will have a MAF.

AFAIK all N/A's are MAP based.........

Scroll down this page to find info on the airbox and pipework and then click the # numbers to expand...........

The pcv (positive crankcase ventilation) system connects into the air box.

As you can see 2 filters are plugged into the crank breathers either side but theres a third that comes of a pipe that comes of the inlet

the little filter in the third picture joins into a pipe that goes up to the inlet manifold, not sure where it would originally go, somewhere on the airbox i assume, could it possibly be that extra air is being sucked in through this filter thus giving it too much air?

here they are ....

It has been suggested it sounds like the knock sensor, I have read loads now about moving the knock sensor to another position, which even came out as an offical subaru bullitin - whats rekon?

At least you have some pictures to work to although you may need a couple of "new" hoses.

anyone know about this knock sensor thing about moving it as apparently can be cause of running problems but by moving it can solve the problem, apparently sensor could be fine but its the vibration of a high milage engine that causes the problem. I have read quite a few posts that peeps have had the problem and moved the sensor and problem solved.

Usually a problem with older turbo engines.

Given what's been removed from/altered on yours, check that it has a clean mating face to the block and it's torqued down and "positioned" correctly first.

I've decided to take a chance at hoping the sensor is at fault and have ordered a new one, £75 I hope its worth it.
