Default Subaru won't start???

The hubby was driving his subaru impreza earlier - booting it in second gear - and it cut out completely and now it won't start again.

The temp gauge is on maximum and the dash lights stay on dim.

It is turning over and on one attempt did start for a few seconds before cutting out again.

He unplugged the coolant sensor and the temp gauge stayed down but still didn't start. Also the CEL has been on and off for the past couple of weeks.

Has anyone got any ideas what it could be??

That sounds like an earth fault, probably on the alternator.

Thank you everyone for your replies. We haven't got a code reader, well we have but it don't work on subaru's.

He is going to look into the earth fault and see if he can find anything as the battery is fine. The thing that worried him was the way the temp gauge is on max as soon as the key goes in the ignition, which it did this morning after being stood all night.

Thanks again

He has just rung Area 52 our local scooby clinic and they said it sounds like an earth fault too.
