Question Engine spec advice - question heavy!

It's time I started thinking about what bits to gather for my engine, I want to build something that'll work well with a 34mm restrictor in one turbo and also make good reliable power with a different turbo. I'd like to see near 400bhp in unrestricted guise if it's possible without spending a fortune.

What I have so far -

'02 UK STI short motor, requires a piston so will fit a new set - any pointers on what to go for would be appreciated, and are the rods any good?

2 sets of V3 STi heads, I hear these have a good set of cams in from the factory, are there any other things worth doing to them (porting etc)?

I've been advised that a VF30 would be a good turbo to work with the restrictor, but don't know what to go for for derestricted power. Any pointers?

Finally, as I don't have an inlet manif as yet I'm thinking the STI RA manifold with 5th injector would be good and fit the V3 heads - am I right in this?

Sorry for all the questions, new to this turbo malarkey!

Many thanks,

Adam

Update - I've now got an STI RA inlet manifold with the 5th injector, and a VF30 to use with a restrictor.

What loom do I need to work with this inlet manifold? IE is it specific to an STI RA or are the classic STI's the same?

Ta,

Adam.

HI, firstly the most commonly used turbo with a restrictor is the VF34, a very very good spec engine, high comp with WRC cams etc should reach 330bhp ish on 102 rally spec fuel. In your spec with V power I would say 280bhp is pretty good. Unrestricted a td05 20g should see you toward the 400bhp mark, there are many other turbo's available depending on budget. I wouldn't bother with the RA 5th injector manifold as it's not used/needed.

I think I can live with the slight extra lag of the VF30 over the VF34 at least to begin with, they're the same compressor and exhaust housings after all. Maybe I should've explained a bit better, I'm starting off with a bare caged shell so I don't have any parts bar what i've said above so I'm buying things as I go along.

Short motor wise it'll be having a rebuild before going in, but I'm wondering do I upgrade rods and/or pistons or use new OE spec parts if I want to use a TD05 20G to it's full potential?

If you are getting the engine rebuilt go forged as it will save money in the long run.
