Default How to tell a jdm engine??

Hello guys
Well iv been thinking about what to do next to my car power wise, the guy I brought it off said it had a rebuild and was a later spec engine but no paper work to back it up.. The actual block has been sprayed a very light gold/silver colour is there a way I can tell off engine numbers? If so where can I find them or what can I look out for? All I can see is the ej20 and some numbers where the starter is. It came with a vf35 turbo on it so was wondering if they just put a newer lump in it??
Any help/advise would be great
