help! hope I've not bought a lemon!
Hi guys,
I just bought a 51 reg bug eye WRX sportwagon (parallel import)
it had hardly any fuel in it, everything was good on the test drive, bought it, filled it up (stupidly) with 95 ron, and ten minutes later the engine management light started flashing then came on and stayed on.
Have i F*&ked my car up on day one with the wrong fuel do you reckon?
I'm taking it in to my local garage in the morning to hopefully get it plugged in to find a fault code.
just wondering whether you guys think that would do it on its own, or indicative of a pre-existing fault? tick over now seems slightly erratic, and a bit lumpy if driven hard, but i was mostly being gentle with it since the light came on. Also it had been sat for a few weeks, would this maje a difference? clean out required?
hope someone can help, cheers
Charlie

Fuel shouldn't make too much differance I wouldn't have thought, know my
Mother put 95 in my classic and didn't course any issues. Just doesn't burn as clean or produce as much power but still petrol.

as above long term its no good as you will get detonation but not instantly like that could be maf sensor or idle control valve

cheers for the replies fellas.
i guess that probably means something more serious then!?
you don't reckon its just cos its been sat unused then?
i'll hopefully find out tomorrow if he can plug his diagnstics system in i guess.
( may be a visit to the trader i bought it from (bmw trader not scooby specialist)

yeah its probably an easy fix, but i really don't want to be having problems from day one of ownership, i'll see what i can do this week with it, and maybe see what the dealer will give me off if needs be! still tempted to give it back, should get a 3 month warranty in theory, i can't see he can argue with a fault that appeared on the same day. (i do really want the car though!!)
daren't really drive it at the mo, in case it is serious.

The bugeye is standard obdII so codes can be read. If you have an Android phone buy an ELM327 Bluetooth adapter off ebay (About £13) and download Torque Pro (About £3) This way you can read your own codes and clear them from the ecu without having to take it to a garage. Shove some octane booster in the tank and when you get down to half a tank fill it up with v-power or tesco momentum. Drive it carefully until then and you shouldn't have any problems.

sorry hadn't seen the last few replies!
as far as updates go:-
subaru dalers say ecu is f&$ked, not talking to OBD at all
they reckon it is because of exhaust blowing (turns out not bolted together properly!)
they suggested lambda sensor due to exhaust issue.
have new exhaust and new (secondhand) ecu on the way, planning on fitting it all, seeing what it drives like, then go for remap, and see if that works.
(thanks d4vidh i have the elm 327, gonna try that asosoon as new ecu is plugged in)

For instance the other week when I had a new exhaust fitted we started it before fitting the sensor which caused the engine management light to come on.... out came the HTC and the elm, fault code removed and engine light off..... simples

jdm uk etc makes no difference as the obd port is the same

they are definitely good! just plugged mine in and it gave me a fault code that the subaru dealers couldn't find they reckon my ecu is fried and won't talk to the obd.
FAIL
the fault codes is for a misfire on cyls 1 and 3, is this a common fault, anyone know where to start?
