Default rear whine

Hi guys , looking for some advice, ive come 180 miles today on holiday in my 2003wrx after about 40 miles a whine from the n/s rear developed , never heard or had a problem before? At first i was thinking diff or wheel bearing but it was intetmitant for the next 100 miles or so ....the bit i dont get is as soon as i touch the brake or handbrake its gone straight away only to return? Any ideas guys? Thanks very much in advance...

Check your disc / pads - my guess it on these because it changes when the brake it pressed.

I've just had the same problem, drove me bloody mad pumping on the handbrake or pressing the brake pedal. Turned out that my rear pads were sticking in the caliper on one side (dont ask), but have just replaced discs and pads all round. Massive difference now
