Default urgent engine advice please

I am looking for a cheap engine for my 1999 uk impreza. Someone told me i could use any classic engine i just have to use my inlet manifold on other years, now someone else has told me that i can not use a 93-98 engine has the stud pattern for my inlet manifold is different but 99 on wold fit.
Please please could someone tell me where i stand on this subject.

Any Impreza turbo short block will fit. This is the engine minus the cylinder heads. So along as your heads are ok, you can just swap the bottom end and your good to go.

Don't forget you will need new head gaskets and oil pump.

That have different bolt patterns, sensors, cams etc......

You can use heads from any car from 92-98 (phase 1_1.5) but any later world require much more modification.

My car is a uk 99, are you saying i must use my heads on any impreza turbo short block unless its a 99 v5 i think, otherwise i have to do modifications. Will my inlet manifold fit any block someone told me 93-98 are different stud pattern. Also which is the best block to source seeing i wont to up power at a latter date. I am very gratefull for all the advice and help. Thanks

The inlet manifold attaches to the heads, not the block. This is where the bolt pattern is different in the later classic cars.

you could swap the whole engine from a v5 or v6 car.

As for which short block is best, it depends on what you want from it. Best at producing power, torque, strongest, least maintenance.

I would go with a newage 2.0 sti as they are very strong, don't use oil, and they like to rev

Just a thought , seeing i have to use my heads on a block from 93-98 i take it the heads from 99-2000 are the same. What about the heads from 2001-04 if i saw a full engine from then would it be ok. Just thinking of the trouble swopping heads.
Also are sti heads from 99-2000 and 2001-04 ok. Many thanks

I must not have Bern clear in the earlier posts.

The only way of not swapping your heads on to a new block is if you get a long engine from a my99-00 car. All other engines will require other areas to be addressed (new ecu, custom loom etc) if fitting the long engine.

Many thanks on that, getting alittle more understanding now, need a 99-00 full engine if i dont wont to swop heads. Is the 99-00 sti engine the same and can be used with heads or would that need ecu ect. Whatever i do i am going to need to save more money, i was hoping to pick a good short block up for £200 and a long engine for around £300, no such luck.
Think i would like to go for sti block to be honest, depends whats around. Thanks for your help,
