Default are closed deck block engines sti spec

Just a quick question I have recently purchesd a cdb engine I'm pretty sure it is out of a v1 or 2 because of the cam covers have the raised lettering and the hatch markings on the cyl block under the altenator and was wondering how I could tell if it is a ati spec without taking the cyl head off and checking the pistons

Many tanks

As you said Dan, the only sure way is to check what pistons are fitted.
It's possible to remove one of the front gudgeon pin access bungs and using a small inspection mirror and torch, check the underside of the pistons :
Crosshatching on underside of piston = Cast WRX pistons.
Smooth finish with HF/1/2/3 stamped on underside = Forged STi pistons.
