Default 99 maf failure - what actually causes the failure?

I had a maf basically let go on saturday, green stripe one, but it was at least 7yr old. Just driving in 4th went for 5th and just lost all power - no CEL at this point. So coasted till as a safe spot where car just cut out.

On trying to restart it started but got cel so checked psi3 data monitor and it said error code 23 so knew it was maf related so limped it home

had a spare maf so swapped it over, reset ecu and jobs a goodun, cel cleared all hunky dory

so decided to take the old maf apart, lifted the flap on the casing to expect to see something burnt out but it was just a circuit board covered in soft rubbery glue, nothing out of the ordinary

so what actually fails on them?
