Push button start for a race car, without key.
Has anyone wired one in, and can you explain it to me please?
4 wires at the back of the ignition barrel without a ground wire, i've been warned that touching the wires to the chassis will cause issues, and it should not be done this way.
How do i go around doing it?
Thanks

If you are going to do this you need to look at the other side of the first connector (usually blue- B72 below) as the wiring you picture is part of the switch rather than the loom.
Depending upon model and year will determine wiring colours.
There are plenty of diagrams on the web re: wiring in a push button as long as you know which wire is which (Batt;Ign;Acc;Starter).

White - Starter Solinoid
White/Black - ECU (I think.)
Yellow - Fuse Box
Green - Fuse Box
What i don't understand is the grounding issue, if i am to removed the ignition barrel, where do i ground the switches and buttons if i can't ground them to the chassis.
Thanks

For the starter solenoid you only need to give it a a switched 12v (from either the barrel or your new starter button) and the starter motor earths through the block.
There's no earth for the ignition system at this point, because the switch is only giving power to main relay etc etc. earthing is taken care of elsewhere.
Draw it out and understand what's going on before starting to cut wires. It's pretty straightforward to be fair, but if you have immobilisers/alarm you'll have to do your homework

The ignition at position 4 provides the 12V needed for the starter, the starter is engine ground, but if you are to remove the ignition barrel, take the single cable that goes to the starter and connect it to a new switch, an earth from the new switch is still needed whether you connect the earth to the chassis or directly to the engine (Both are the same.), otherwise a complete circuit is not present.
Or is the white cable a constant 12V from the battery and i have made a mistake and it doesn't go where i thought it goes?
That would make more sense.
Thanks

The ignition switch has 4 functions that you will need to meet/disable.....
1) Mechanical Steering lock
2) Switch to connect Battery +ve feed to Ignition circuits still used
3) Switch to connect Battery +ve feed to any Accessory circuits still used
4) Switch/Button/relay for connecting Battery to Starter circuit
Items 2&3 can be a heavy duty switch or a switch/relay combo depending on what sort of load the "race car" still has fitted.
You really need the power supply routing diagrams for the vehicle you are talking about...................
for example..
