Default new to the scooby world

hey every one sorry if this is posted in the incorrect place ,
basically a friend of mine has had a subaru impreza sport 2l non turbo 99 model , basically he started using it as a works van as his van broke down , he was covering aprox 50 mile aday to & from work , when it started to develope a misfire, so he left it parked up , since his company give him another van , he decide to make room and sell the subaru , long story short i bought it purly as a little week end project , so far i have changed the spark plugs , ht leads , cleaned throttle body, idle control valve, fuel filter , air filter with no luck , i can only think now maybe the coil pack its self , if there a way to test this ? i should add the car idle is perfect no fluctuations , when driving one min all the power will be there and responsive next min spluttering , any advice and info would be greatly appreciated , if i cant find the problem i will prob end up putting it for sale as spares or repairs which would be a shame as its got full service history , 8 months test & 4 months tax not to mention cheap to insure : )
