On My my94 Impreza turbo the oil appears at differant levels on either side of the stick (one higher than the other) My bro's does the same the car is dipped on level ground. Which level should i go off. Is this common or just downrite daft.

You should only read the side with the F and L marks
my handbooks says---check oil on level ground pull out dip and wipe reinsert and check again, top up to top mark(F)if low.
you should always check oil after a couple of mins after the car has stopped and warm.
BTW scoobys are prone to give funny readings why????im sure somebody will know.

My 99MY only shows the correct reading on one side of the dipstick, the other side is covered in oil. Perhaps it's just picking up oil from the inside of the tube?

Cool

The logic of checking when the oil is potentially hot is lost on me surely this alters the volume of the oil & thus position on the dip stick? Or am i the dip stick? Although i have also had strange readings when trying 2 read my thingamy

Cant believe that no-one knows this
Firstly make sure that the picture of the oil can on the top of the dipstick is facing the right way up,
Secondly, the reason the oil reads two different levels on each side is because the dipstick bends when it reaches the bottom as you push it in . LOL . one side of the dipstick lays in the top of the oil and the other side takes the reading.
The reason you must have the picture of the oil can on the top facing the right way is so that the full mark on the dipstick is on top when it goes in the oil.........
makes a change for me to know something!!

surely it's better to read oil levels when the engine has fully cooled down, as someone else said volumes will be affected.

Come on you load of dipsticks !!!

Its as Rob states and the engine should be cool as to let excess oil drain back to the sump.

I beleive your suppose to avoid over filling with oil, as this causes contamination of the solenoid...

I keep mine at 2/3 of full and check each week.

There are two holes on the dipstick. One near the bottom of the dipstick and one up higher before the F. The oil level should be just on the top hole. Any more and you risk contaminating the solenoid which would cause poor running.

Cheers,

Wrexy.

1) Park Scooby on level surface.
2) Turn off engine.
3) Immediately remove dipstick (to let oil drain better out of narrow empty tube whilst oil is hot and runny)
4) Next morning wipe dipstick and push in tube, withdraw immediately.
5) Oil should not be higher than "F" when cold.
Measuring oil level every time in this manner whilst oil is cold will give repeatable and accurate results.

Hope this helps as I had the same difficulty with my previous scooby.
