Default Subaru whine on decelaration

hi all

not sure anyone will be able to help and it may just be me, haven't been in a Scooby for a while.

Anyway after about 5 mins and i really only hear it on deceleration and im not gunning it, its like a whine, really bloody annoying me now. Tonight i was approaching a r/about and as nothing was around just put it in neutral to see if i it still did it and it does maybe not as bad but still can hear it. likes its winding down.

I'm 100% its not turbo but who knows, one wheel i think is buckled and will be changing soon but trying to eliminate as much as i can.

any ideas, thought i would ask before spending money on other things.

Could it be clutch or diff or maybe the turbo or maybe the wheel is that bad its causing the noise.

thanks in advance

Does the noise disappear when you press the clutch?

Not transmission related in your opinion?
I get a fair bit of noise from mine and just turn the stereo up.

Well I say I don't think it's transmission but have no idea. Car drives fine apart from steering wobble at 60, due to the bent wheel.

I will try and depress the clutch and see if it still does it but I think I did that last night and it was.

I tend to do the radio trick too which isn't ideal lol

You say buckled wheel!!! has it been kerbed, maybe wheel bearing? Mine makes an awful noise after a few miles but S4U said there was no play in it so leave it for now!

I get 2 lots of whining on mine - reverse and 1st gear whine, but that is self inflicted after smoking up all 4 wheels

I also get a lot of whining from the passenger seat, but you could argue that too is self inflicted because I married the wench

Mine started whining in deceleration in high gears, then started doing it all the time at high constant speed. Although it looked fine, I replaced all the gearbox oil and its improved quite considerably. When I drained it a few chucks of metal came out. It's also been doing it for the last 40,000 miles and not really been an issue. I believe its the bearings in the transfer case or the main output bearings which are most likely to go - but David at API might come along to correct me. Got a spare box but never bothered to replace the whole thing
