I keep reading about different colour mafs, anyone care to explain what the different colours indicate?

Default MAFs

Hi Ash, I'm no expert so I asked Bob Rawle the same question & he said just buy the correct MAF for your car.I'm guessing different colours are for different models but that's a guess.
Your model of car (99/00) is particularly prone to MAF failure so avoid "oily" type air filters & filter kits.Opinions vary but I have had a K&N panel filter on my UK 99 for 3 years now with no probs. He also said it is sometimes not evident that the MAF is misreading, the engine runs weak & then >>>BANG! However when my mates MAF failed the car ran like a dog.
Bearing in mind the horrendous cost of a new 99 MAF (£140!) It is possible to "convert" to a second hand New Age setup, ie install an air filter box/MAF/MAF tube/MAF wiring from a 2001-2005 Scoob , this is an option I'm considering but you need someone like Bob Rawle to get it to work with your 99 ECU.As I'm hoping to bolt on a bigger turbo & get mine remapped by Bob this isn't a problem for me.
So you're going to persevere with the Type R then?If I get back on my feet financially I'l be looking for a mint one to keep.

Cheers,John

I seem to remember I put an STI panel filter in but that was a while ago! Once again opinion varies but remember a cone filter without a support will be wobbling about stressing an already fragile MAF.Also Cones need a cold air feed to work properly otherwise they're sucking in hot air from the engine bay. What I'm going to do is remove the plastic resonator that sits in the inner wing so the airflow is improved to the airfilter box.
IMO Maybe the most important thing is check with Bob Rawle if he mapped your ECU, if you have the standard ECU this is dodgy as they are mapped for 100 RON petrol so you need to use octane booster plus Vpower/Super unleaded. Also don't rev the **** off it even if it has an 8000 rpm redline, API suggest no more than about 7000 for an STI and 6500 for a standard turbo like mine.
Have Fun, any probs let me know, I will always try to help.
Cheers,John
