Default sti v6 powersteering problems any help appreciated

hi folks, i have a classic version 6 sti and having problems with my steering when just started the steering is incredibly heavy and when trying to drive its free at points but very lumpy (excuse this description its the best i can think of) if for example i try and turn the wheel will be heavy and will not self correct it will stick !!! at first i thought it was my steering pump but ive just changed that and still no better so assume my original pump is fine there is enough tension on the belt i noticed a little play in my inner tie rods so have bought new ones but dont think this will make the steering act like this if anyone has encountered this or has any suggestions i would be happy to try this as im scared im looking at a new steering rack

If you changed the p/s pump and presuming it's in good working order and you've put fresh fluid in it and it's the same then I'd say it could be the rack??
Have a look in the for sale and breaking section as I'm sure I seen a rack or two for sale ealier on today.

Although thinking about it, I'm sure this happend on an RA I had back a good few years ago and I'm sure I changed the pump and that cured it, so make sure the pump you've bought is a good one first before you buy a rack.

Sounds like the steering column U/J is sticking.
Sometimes you can free them off, otherwise refurb or replace!

The Universal Joint which joins the steering column to the rack.
Undo both bolts and slide off splines. Move the joints by hand and check for any stiffness. They should be very easy to move, if there is any notchiness then that is your issue!

Nope, just two bolts on the U/J then slide it off.
Hope you get it sorted!
