Default 2002 wrx modification advice

My brother is about to potentially buy a 2002 wrx.

I don't know about modifications on this car. I suggested to my brother a down pipe and remap like I've done on my hatch, but with the 2002 wrx will there be needs for fuel pump replacement etc too? And how about the standard Intercooler? Does that do a sufficient job?

Thanks

The standard intercooler will be fine with an initial map, I would upgrade the fuel pump, they are not that expensive and it will be more efficient. The power will be restricted by the number of cats in the exhaust, but I would recommend an decat up pipe and a sports cat down pipe. Also I would get a decent panel filter aswell, like a green, k &n, cosworth etc.

You should see about 250-270bhp if its still running the td04 turbo, hope this helps.

That's great advice thanks. I was looking at sports cat up pipe and decat down pipe but you reckon the other way around is better yeah?

Yea I'm sure that's what I have fitted, the up pipe from the turbo is decatted and the downpipe from the manifold has a PPP sports cat fitted. You can go full decat which will release more power but then you may have to change it over for the dreaded MOT.

Get a 'Harvey' up-pipe from Alyn at AS performance, the pre turbo Cat is very restrictive but the std aftermarket de-cat up-pipes tend to be too large a bore and therefore reduce spool (increase lag) if you want to save money just get a std STI up-Pipe don't buy a flex jointed aftermarket one what ever you do!

If you want to stay road 'legal' get a Sports Cat downpipe, decat section and the centre and back box, 2.5' will be fine at your power level 3' will give you more headroom.

Then fit an uprated air filter (to the std box not an induction kit) e.g. K & N, Green or Cosworth and uprated fuel pump Walbro 225 or similar. You may also want a 3 port boost solenoid to improve boost control.

Then get a good remap, go to one of the experts, I use JGM but have had maps from PowerStation (not sure who did it) and Pat Herborn and all were very good.

I had the Powerstation stage 1 kit fitted as my first power mods, this gave me 275bhp.

Just a small but important correction!

I have a 2004 wrx and the one thing I would say before you go for more power is brakes.

Standard ones aint that good and you can get an uprated set for around the 200 pound mark.

Excellent thanks for the advice.

When I got my sti hatch I fitted a cobrasport down pipe with a sports cat. This replaced both upper and lower sections of the down pipe with just one sports cat.

Would that work? Part number SB26

Another quick question - interms of lower cost, what is the effectiveness of just a panel filter and remap?

If you're on a budget look for the following:

Panel filter - new cheap as chips.
Prodrive sports cat down-pipe - used
STI decat up-pipe - used
Second cat de-cat new or used.
Aftermarket back box - used.
