Is there not anywhere local that can refurb your unit ?
I have just had my starter recon`d by a local chap, all that fails in them is the contacts and he charged me £30, yet a recon one is anything from a crap one for 60 or a decent one like original for 200 ! so you are paying for the whole unit when all you need is some brushes in your alternator or bearings replacingdepending on whats at fault
worth a punt as it saves you some £££

That's what i would do, check www.yell.com for motor rewinds and ask there.
Got the little motor on my lathe rewound for £20, a recon/new one starts at £120.
