A Legacy BH twin turbo engine is recognisable by the fact that you will have a turbo oil pressure feed in the left side cylinder head and it will have the phase 2 inlet port design on the heads - staggered bolt pattern. Also will have the phase 2 cam pulleys which are plastic and chunkier than phase 1 plastic type. Will also have the later separate coil packs like newage 2001 on impreza. Will also have the idle control valve mounted on the throttle body. Earlier versions where on the inlet manifold.
If you're lucky you could have a revision D engine which would be a semi closed deck block and has pink top feed injectors.
These engines have higher compression ratio than earlier turbo legacies and impreza turbo.

it'll take a lot of work to get it working. The main stumbling block will be the inlet manifolds aren't directly interchangeable. The cam pulley for the cam sensor pick up is different. The twin turbo setup is not an easy one to master and best to throw it away and stick a single turbo like a td05 instead if doing a conversion .Along with the exhaust pipes and manifold. You'll probably be needing an after market ecu for a chance to use the heads on your car.
These engines have good heads. Some have the valves same as sti v5/6 some same as wrx. Exhaust cams same as sti v5/6 inlet cams similar to wrx. Inlet ports are larger than any impreza classic heads. I like the heads in these engines especially ones with sti type valve (marked id3/ed3 compared to wrx id2/*ed2* (edit changed ed3 to ed2 predictive text problem)
As for reliability it's much to do with how well it's been maintained as a poorly kept one will spin a crank to rod bearing always.Much the same as using excessive boost. These engines don't like a boost increase like an impreza can take due to higher static compression. Also the turbos can fail quite frequently.

id3 is marked on the valve head. The only way to know is take the head off. I'm not sure if it's the same bell housing arrangement only 90% sure. You old box should be a 4 bolt one. The engine is a 6 bolt one but the old 4 bolts will match up to the upper and lower bolt holes on the engine.
