Hey guys quick question, I'm in the process of gathering some parts pre mapping and now I'm thinking of the turbo unit. Just wondering what you guys have or opinions you may know that work well. The car has loads of torque standard and don't want to make it laggy
What I have GB 270 wagon
Spark plugs NGK LFR 7AIX
Panel filter simota
3" ninja frontpipe with 100 cel cat
I'm now looking to buy a sti tmic and then it's turbo options. I'm not looking for masses of power but I would like to keep the torque the car has as standard makes a great town/back road car :-)

A Scoobyclinic SC range if buying new - SC32 would give great spool and torque and not stress the engine and a great exchange price for a new turbo.
VF43 or VF48 from the STI's if secondhand.
Remove both standard cats so you just have the sports cat as the standard exhaust will hold you back.
You'll also want the STI bellows and diffuser for under the bonnet scoop to the intercooler.
Possibly a new fuel pump as six years old or so - piece of mind really.
You need to get a good idea of exactly what you want, don't get a small turbo for instant spool and then be disappointed when not making top end figures.
Also assume you have read up about the 2.5 potential problems.
The GB270 wagon is great when nicely modded

I'm looking for something around the 330bhp and 360lbs torque roughly.
I have read about the pistons being weak and how they don't like boost. Headgaskets iffy also
Gearbox doesn't like 400 lbs torque is that all correct?

My wrx 2003 is running 292.2bhp witn a td05h, on 95octane fuel :-/
For me, that power is more than enough, with the way its delivered, duncan from race dynamix mapped it last month and i love it

At the level you are after the SC32 would be great - fantastic spool and decent power/torque and the safe knowledge of a new turbo. They were £495 +VAT on an exchange basis which is a great price for a new turbo. Main thing I'd say is stick to a turbo suited to the 2.5 not one from a 2.0 - just personally what I chose to do.
I had an SC42 version 1 (TD05-20g billet) on previously and it spooled really well on the 2.5. There are no guarantees with any engine but at these levels it should be fine - having said that engines (STI) have let go at standard levels so your choice - probably no greater risk than it is now though - speak to some respected tuners would be best.
The Hawk 5 speed boxes should be fine at this level assuming no launches/some mechanical sympathy. Mines running 462BHP/491lbft on the 5 speed - 4800 miles and counting.
How old is the clutch - mine only lasted 35000 miles - 15000 of those at 363BHP/350lbft - no launches and usually very sensible driving.

So the TD05 16g was that not made for the 2.0l originally? rather than the 2.5?

The way I'd phrase it is that 2.0's sometimes need smaller turbo's to keep lag to a minimum, the 2.5 can get the same or better spool/torque but with a larger turbo so better figures overall. As I said the SC42 V1 (TD05-20g billet) spooled really well on the 2.5 but people with a 20g on a 2.0 often find them laggy. I'd go for a slightly larger turbo and have the best of both worlds so to speak but the bigger the turbo the closer you are to the engine's limits. Again talk to some respected mappers/tuners for advice.
I'd consider the VF34 more suited to a 2.0 personally - also a bit dated I think. Scoobyclinic would be (and ARE) my preferred
choice. VF43 of VF48 would be ideal if going second hand.
I'm pretty sure the SC32 would outperform the VF34 in almost all areas (flame suit on for anyone with a VF34)
But As Barry W once said - if you can't afford to fix it, don't fu*k with it!
