hello all,
im looking at getting my next Scooby and im leaning towards either getting a classic impreza type r or a p1.
can anyone tell me what sort of power is safe to run in the both of these?

I'm running 384/349 on stock internals (1999 STi 5)... since November 2010. Still going strong.
But under 350/350 is probably more sensible.

tbh with a P1 or type R theyre generally more looked after than the avarage turbo2000 - but saying that you can get dogs in all marques and models
usual stuff for classics really is rust on the rear arches
water in the boot
rust along the top of the windscreen
and obviously your normal things like big end knock, maf sensor, service history etc
the difference between a £3500 type R and a £5000 type R can be significant, ask yourself why such a low price?
some say that 350 bhp is achievable with stock internals and little modification to any major components - but any more than 350 then its time to look at better internals
all IMO of course

thanks for the advise lads! i was hoping for about 350, think i would be happy with that in a car that only weighs about 1200kg lol.
also i may be being a right noob but how do you check the MAF? i just did a quick search and someone has said you leave the engine running and then unplug it, if the car cuts out or starts to splutter then its fine but this sounds like a bit of a dodgy test to perform?

SN myth.
The only proper way is data logging and checking for any abnormalities in the voltage readings e.g. unusual spikes or dips.
