Default Timing belt tensioner mods

Got myself a nicely fresh rebuilt phase one motor and am now looking to buy the timing belt kit.
Can the early Hydraulic tensioner be replaced with the spring type?
Are the early ones prone to failure?

Thanks

I wouldn't have thought so as the mounting points and shape of the block are different. I have had no problem with my old style tensioner (as yet!). Same basic operation (oil filled piston).

I was under the impression that there are two different mounting brackets, same bolt holes on the block?
