ECU Question
A prodrive ECU has came up for sale again in the classifieds for the 97/98 uk classic. Only problem I see is thats its labelled 8S just like the standard one in my 97 turbo 2000. The seller says prodrive mapped them for the PPP cars. Can anyone confirm this? As far as I knew the 8S is the standard, non mappable ECU!

As far as I can tell from google the SP ECU is indeed a prodrive/PPP one. PPP means prodrive performance pack. I found a list on another forum with all the ECU specs for all imprezas.
It appears the one for sale may not be the prodrive one after all. The prodrive one has probably been removed and replaced with the 8S somewhere along the way
All I can find for prodrive ECU is SP.

Hi just wondering if anyone here could help I have just finished my subaru impreza 94 saloon build bodywork and suspension all done and am now starting on power I have fitted fmic cone air filter walbro pump big de cat full stainless from de cat it has standard td05 turbo still running standard .6 bar of boost I wanted yellow injectors but my local tuner said i would need a compatible ecu to run them and i would be better off with a manual boost controller and a rolling rd tune my question is what would be the better option be am open to all answers but don't really want to go crazy on the £ notes at the min I'm also looking for reliability was rolling rd recently at 255 bhp hope someone can help with my dilemma

Boost controller and a remap is the cheapest answer I'd say, depends on what ECU you have though. If you have the standard Subaru ECU, it will need an additional board installed to make it remappable. But for the money that costs you might as well get a second hand apexi ECU and stick that in.
If your only getting 0.6 bar of boost at the moment, something isn't right. You should have at least 0.9 bar! There's a table that shows standard boost targets for the various Impreza models, search google for it.

Hi piehole thanks very much for the fast reply yes as far as I'm aware it has the standard ecu I will check today though what would I need to note when checking ecu and the tuner told me I am boosting at .6 but it runs fine so probably is .9 so at the mo would be happy to go with manual boost controller and another rolling rd I'm gonna use for track so the tuner said 1.2 bar will be safe. Was just thinking of a way of making it run safe as when I fitted the upgrades I was told to drive it slowly to the tuner as air and fuel mixture could be critical but on the rolling rd he said it was fine and berried the throttle just don't want to blow the engine just yet do my standard ecu cope with the air and fuel mixture well thanks again piehole

I must correct my last post, if you get a remap carried out you won't need a boost controller! But the only way to remap is by fitting an ESL or similar daughter board, failing that a whole new ECU from the likes of apexi. Or, your ECU might have already been modified with a daughter board.
The ECU is under the carpet in the passengers footwell. Lift the carpet and remove the kick plate and you will see the ECU. It will have a sticker on it with two large characters, usually a number and letter. For example mine is 8S.
To see if the ECU has been modified, you'll need to open the metal box and look at the circuit board. It'll be pretty obvious. There'll either be an extra chip installed on the existing board or there'll be a separate board attached.
Because my 8S ECU can't be remapped, the previous owner of my car had fitted a fuel cut defender and a manual boost controller. The fuel cut defender is made by superchips. They recommended (at the time) that boost then be set to 16 psi without any other fuelling changes. I'm not so sure, so I removed the boost controller and reverted back to stock boost until I can afford a new ECU or ESL board.
Id maybe suggest that you go to a different tuner to have it looked at, especially if the guy thinks "it'll be fine" without checking anything. Keep the boost at stock levels and drive it easy until your sure its set up properly.
Especially important to get it set up properly if your putting it on the track where there's no such thing as driving it easy!!!

i thought on the AE801 e3 the whole ecu gets plugged in and the standard map deleted and the 'new' customised map installed/setup/ saved in the original boards its self ie no chips/tuning boxs fitted ? sorry pie though you didnt see it

Hi guys well yes it's a standard ecu with no chips on the board so totally standard 94 ecu would I be able to run yellow 440 cc injectors on this ecu and then boost controller and a rolling rd tune without a remap

What's the code on the ECU? You could probably fit a fuel pressure regulator and a decent pump, raise the fuel pressure a little and up the boot to suit. But again, that's a job for the tuning guys. They'll need to test the air/fuel ratio to get it right. Not sure about the standard ECU running 440 injectors. I think you have 380's which should be good for 300bhp from what I've read. Search on here for the Impreza tuning guide, very interesting read.

Well thank you very much for now I think ill just go with the boost controller at 1.2 bar and then rolling rd tune I take it this time the will adjust something rather than putting the boot down and give me a printout yes if not maybe change tuner what's your thoughts on that and yes I'll get the code off the ecu just put it all back in typical newbie ha

New ecu upgrade needed then thanks for all the replies very much appreciated one last thing though when I have a manual boost controller fitted and they rolling rd it how will they make sure it's fuel mixture is correct if they can't access it through the ecu thanks guys

Chris, the W6 ECU boosts at 11.47psi (0.8bar) and has a fuel cut of 14.57psi (1bar) as standard.
You'd need to fit a fuel cut defender (HKS would probably be best) to use a manual boost controller to get up to 1.1bar.
Without the FCD, if you raise the boost to 1bar or above, the car will cut out to prevent damage.
If you kept it around 0.9bar without the FCD, you'd probably be fine.

Ok guys that's great information I'm only driving the car round the rds at min bedding brakes in at the national speed limit of course after my last rolling rd they didn't do any tweaking at allafter all my mods fitted as mentioned above standard boost does the ecu correct the fuel mixture or should it have been done on the rollers thanks again guys
