Default Classic windscreen upper weather seal refitting?

I have taken off the weather strip at the top of the front screen in order to paint the roof. The rear one is very clean where the screen is bonded in but the front has been fitted less carefully with the adhesive coming out and sticking to the original clips.

I have bought all new clips to hold the seal in place but the screen adhesive/sealer is stopping the clips from seating correctly. I am thinking I may need to cut the excess adhesive out before fitting the clips and weather strip. Is it possible to fit the clips before the weather strip and clip it into place after?

Any other tips and tricks?

Just cracked my front window top to bottom. Then middle to side, pushing a satnav on the window not noticing I had a stone chip close, gutting when I saw it go.
