Question classic engine transplant

When transplanting an engine, does the gear box need to be removed or can it be left alone and you just pull the engine off of the box?

Like u said, just pull the engine off the box, just remember to take out the clutch pin and disengage The clutch fork.

Having done it several times. On your own it's easier to take the box off for removing the engine. 2 people and it's easy as you can do all the mounts and the second person can tilt the engine. Taking a box off with transmission jack is easy even with one person. I always find re-fitting a box is a PITA

I'll be on my own and only have trolly jacks to help...

I've done plenty of clutch and gearbox changes and I can tell you, when you're laying under the car with that heavy **** on top of you, the last thing you wanna do is that job!

So this is great news being able to do the engine transplant and NOT having to touch the gear box... happy days thank you AS & crazyspeed

If you've done engine transplants before you should find Subaru transplants easy. Personally, I leave the gear box in situ, disconnect the steady bar and support the box with a jack.

This will be my first engine transplant, but thats a good idea edsel thank you... I'll disconnect the bar at the top and also undo the bolts holding the box to the cradle underneith.

That should give me more 'wiggle room'

When sourcing a replacement engine am I limited to swapping like for like, or could I fit a Ver5/6 Type-R engine in my 4dr Ver5/6?

Do I have a range of replacements or will the loom etc only allow for exact swap?

for a straight fit you could only use V4 at newest as the inlet manifold/head spacing changes
