Default ej20 upgrades

Hi all . .

Everyone has their own opinions on what the best way to start tuning one .

So I have a fully standard type r developing 301.9bhp @1.35bar,since then ive added an alkatek ecu, japspeed 3" system, an aps inner wing induction kit and am looking at a decat next.

What would you guys do whilst initially keeping the maf and tmic? What bolt on turbo changes are there?

My ultimate goal for the car is about 375-400 with no meth

Upgrade turbo and injectors to 550cc, should bring you what you looking for.

"what the best way to start tuning one"

From the inside out would be my answer to such an open question. The biggest issue by far is understanding what kind of life the engine has had before you owned it.

I wouldn't bother modding any engine unless I knew the internals were 100%. The crank, rods, pistons, rings and associated bearings are all in spec without excessive wear. Then you should have a good idea of what power the motor is capable of handling.

Th car has had a freshly reconditioned engine from the last owner and he only put 6000 miles on it in 4 years of ownership . . that fact in itself doesnt give away what condition its in though I know.

Martyn at engine tuner did comment that this was one of the best, if not the best, classic hes driven in terms of the way it goes, stops and generally feels

375-400bhp reliably on a classic?
New gearbox, either a 6 speed or something like a scoobyclinic gearset, full engine rebuild and after market ecu, bigger turbo, injectors, uprated internals, the list is endless though you could cheat with 2nd hand parts like a new age STI bottom end but if you are going to do it, you may as well do it right the first time and not twice
Of course it wont be cheap, tuning classics never is, your "safe" (and that safe depends on a lot of factors, most which you may not know unless you open the engine up) limit would be around 330-350bhp.

Tony

PS, oh and budget 10k ish

Not wanting to **** on any bonfires....

I bought mine with a "fresh recon motor" turns out it to be a legacy engine that had been built by the pg tips monkey. Live an learn eh.

I was going to refresh it with new bearings and rings, I wanted a bottom end capable of 400bhp but running a safe 350ish, I ended up with this:

All bearing surfaces tolerances measured/checked
Replacement center thrust crank (used)
ACL Race mains and big ends.
New age STI con rods.
Mahle Forged pistons 92.5 O/S
OE bottom end gasket rebuild kit inc new casing bolts
ARP 11mm head studs.
Gen Subaru MLS head gaskets.
Finch Motorsport modified oil pump.
New OE water pump.
Lightened and balanced 4.8kg billet fly wheel.
Exeedy pink box clutch.
Millers Nano Drive 10/50 oil.

22b cylinder heads, valves reseated refaced to finch motorsport spec.
Valve guides and seals replaced.
Valve clearances set.
Machining and Long block assembled by Finch motorsport.

Gen Subaru timing belt tensioner & Idlers.
Gates "Racing" timing belt and RCM timing belt guide.
Genuine Subaru cam cover gaskets/seals.

"New age" coil pack conversion.
440cc Yellow injectors (used).
Sard fuel pressure regulator & Gauge.
Walbro 255 lph fuel pump.
Harvey "Trick" up pipe.
Decat down pipe.

ESL Daughter board.
Mapped by Race dynamix.
MAF Delete.
K&N Air filter.
HDI Hybrid FMIC
Upgraded Viper performance Intercooler hoses
and clamps.

Comfortable 317bhp. Expecting to get near 350 next year with a few tweaks.
