Blob WRX - 280bhp. Start with standard or PPP?
I'm looking to buy a Blobeye WRX pretty soon, I can't decide weather to get a standard one or a PPP.
Either way I'd look to increase the power to 280bhp/310lbft on the standard TD04. Obviously the PPP has most of the hardware parts already, where as I'd need to buy decats, a backbox and y-pipe for a standard WRX, but they're not that much second hand, so I'm not worried about that.
So my question is, is it easier/cheaper to remap the standard cars ECU or the Prodrive Ecutek ECU?
Thanks.

I'm not really a big fan of the PPP remap my car had it done from new and within a year I got it remapped again and gained another 30 bhp with only adding a panel air filter,so to answer your question I would pick up some modifications yourself and get a proper remap done but really also depends what car turns up for you when you decide to buy.SJ.

Open source map last time I checked was around £350. ECUTEK is more like £500 depending where you go. ECUTEK is generally more expensive because your paying for the licence of the software and then the mapping of it on top iirc. Open source will just use the standard ecu and flash map over it.
Be surprised if you hit 310ftlbs on a TD04....

Buy based on the condition and history of the car, if it has PPP then fine you'll at least get to experience a little more power than standard and if it doesn't have PPP then you were going to take the mapping route anyway so it just saves you buying a couple of bits.
PPP has 2nd cat removed and PPP back box along with the silicone Y pipe on the intercooler and is a simple 2 min ECU re-flash and is by far the cheapest safest way to get more power out of a WRX.
If your going the re-map route your looking at around £1k all in.
Fuel pump, full de-cat, panel filter, and a couple of silicone pipes should see you around the 280/290 mark, PPP is 260 ish but does have nice midrange torque and I don't think there is bugger all in it on the road in the real world, a remapped WRX does pull a little harder and longer but there are risks associated with a mapping session where as the PPP is plug and play and a VERY safe map.
You pay your money and take your choices.

Doesn't the PPP also include a decatted up pipe?
Good advice Ditch, thank you. 1k is a bit of a kicker, hopefully I can buy the exhaust & decats second hand to save a few quid.

To be completely honest knowing what I know now and having owned and done both, I would not spend £350/500 remapping a WRX unless I was changing the turbo as well, just not worth the extra expenditure over what you get from PPP for bugger all money, costs less than £100 to do PPP and you get a decent increase, compare that to an extra 20bhp for another £7/800 just not worth it IMO.

i have to say its not worth the money to map a wrx up to that level with standard turbo etc.

Just on prices, I have a completely bog standard PPP and whilst passing, called in to
Indigo GT for a chat about servicing and remapping.
He recommended changing to a 3port solenoid (what ever that does - excuse my ignorance)and a remap would give me 280 - 300.
It would cost £500.
30ish horses for 500 quid, personally, I don't think so.

Cheers Phil.
So £300 on the exhaust and silicone Y-pipe, and someone friendly to put the PPP map on my ECU or just buy a PPP ECU and you've got the full PPP pack installed, good to know!

All I know I wouldn't change my ecu with a prodrive one as you could have problems. I believe you would need a key from Subaru (don’t quote me on this, but I'm sure its not free). A Mapper like Racedymamics can save you std map before putting on the new one. Wouldn't this be the safer option may not be the cheapest.

That's all well and good philwrx, but an extra 25/30bhp for all that outlay over PPP will in effect in the real world mean bugger all.
Bang for buck PPP is where it's at these days with a WRX, unless as afore mentioned you change the turbo and go above 300bhp.
Someone like toneh above will flash you the map for free, and keep an eye out on here and the Y pipe will cost you 20 quid decat centre section 50 quid max.
Only time to bother with the cost of a remap on a WRX is full decat, fuel pump, STI injectors, STI top mount, 3 port boost solenoid , air filter, VF 34/35 turbo and a remap which will see upwards of 330bhp and maybe as much as 350bhp with good spool and pulling hard to the red line, then it's worth it.

Money isn't really the issue, however value for money is - this is both in terms of the car and mods. I'm just a real tight ****!
I have looked at a few Blob STIs, you're looking around the 7k mark, it's a hell of a car however for my needs I think it would be overkill, I also think I'd be inclined to spend serious money on an STI doing quite a few bits a pieces to get it where I want it.
With a WRX I'll just improve the power a tad (as above), probably whack some adjustable camber bolts and springs on it, slot in a decent set of a pads in and call it a day.
I do prefer the sound of the PPP map route, especially if people have got it flying about and will flash your ECU for a few notes. The idea of adding 40bhp to the WRX for perhaps as low as £200-250 if I keep an eye out in the for-sale section and ebay, is certainly more appealing than an extra 60bhp for £700 for the complete remap route with a new pump, 3 port boost solenoid and live map.
