Default another thread about broken bolts :(

Hi, so i see a little drop of oil coming from the passenger underside of the rocker cover, 'just a drop' so no real worries. The other day i got round to looking at it and it wouldnt tighten, just kept turning, so i assumed the guy i bought it off had put all his manly strength into doing it up and stripped the thread. Anyway, i left it at that and a day or two later noticed a bit more oil while i was at my girlfriends. So i got under it and found the bolt was actually broke and had just bee pushed back into place. It has broke off just where the threads start on the bottom center hole, while i was driving back to the parents the bolt fell out and vacated more oil, so now its on an axle stand waiting for the next move. Neither garage near me will do it. So what is best to do?

I have some extractors, is it worth trying to drill and remove it?

or

I have an impact driver, if i try and put a slot in the end and beat it? i assume its in beyond the 4.7 torque its meant to else it wouldnt have broke.

or

I am open to suggestions, have looked at how to take the rocker cover off and i can do that, but just looking for advice

thanks
Karl

Screw extractors wont work as the drill bit will wander and it will just destroy the threads/ally casting.

Get an m6 helicoil kit, it will drill out nicely and then you rethread it and helicoil it and just put a new bolt it.

Had the same problem with mine, tried bolt extractors, and all sorts, helicoil is the only way really.

I had this once, i drilled a 2mm hole through the middle of bolt then hammered a star drive bit into the hole and turned it out with grips, worked for me, helicoil is good but last resort imo

i have small drill bits and extractors, and a nice shiny impact driver thats never been used. A helicoil kit i have never used and have no idea on using them.

Thanks for the advice though

You take a risk drilling into a steel/iron bolt in an ally housing as if the drill wanders you will just destroy the bolt housing and the threads.

Even with a centre punch it is a nightmare.

I would skip all the aggro and just heli coil it...
