V4 1998 Sti Type R - engine internals
Hi guys,
I need to have my engine rebuilt due to head gasket failure.
I was wondering what engine parts are different on the type R compared to other Scoobs?
Are any of the engine parts forged?
If the engine has stronger internals, I will just re-use the standard parts, but if there are any known weaknesses, now is the chance for me to upgrade, as I use this car for track days!
Thanks

I do know and have heard from various sources that the type r's did have some uprated parts for sure.
In my case I have a v4 type r with a v7 jdm sti bottom end which is just great, had the heads stripped and rebuilt and had cosworth head gaskets put on.
I'd recommend that, it runs really really strong.

The rods are the weak point in the standard type r, but they are good for 350bhp so all depends how much you want to spend, the cheapest option is as above, if you can get a good bottom end from a reputable supplier (one of the breakers on here), or someone selling a built engine, sure there are a couple for sale in here at the moment.
Unless you have big plans for the car i'd try and find a secondhand BUILT engine off here that's been put together by one of the quality known engine builders, going to work out a lot cheaper, especially if its a long engine with heads and cambelt etc freshly done.
You'll be able to sell your heads for about £250/300 so can re-coupe some cash that way too.

Good crank, con rods and acl race bearings and you got a winner...
Or as said before buy a good rebuilt bottom end
Prefer to build it my way rather than just buying one..
Think it's piece of mind
