Default Identifying engine type from serial number?

Does anyone know if it's possible to identify the engine type from the six-digit serial number underneath the intercooler? Every resource that I've found says that you have to ask a dealer, but I wondered if there was an online resource that could tell me?

Prob not tbh.

Look for a white sticker and bar code on your center timing cover to the bottom left of the front pulley. That will give you the exact engine designation provided the engine or cover has not been replaced during the life of the car.
There are also small white stickers on the rear of each cylinder head but they normally fade with age and from the heat from the engine.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the stickers have long-gone... Are there any other numbers on the block that can identify whether I have a V1, V2 or UK spec engine?
