Default running on 2 cylinders

Hi all,

I will try to make it simple and tell what we have checked first.

Car is 96 wrx. New shortblock out in. Car then only drives on 3 cylinders. Did the coilpack conversion from classic to new age before this.

Have checked the wiring twice, to see if there is anything wrong with the igniter bypass.

Checked the coils and found out that there is a problem with the coil on nr 4. Swapped it with nr 3 and the problem just moved. Checked the plug and it was not wet, that tells me that there is deffinately spark there. Check the injector and that does work.

Measured the coil and wires and it is power there.

Could it be just a bad coil, even though it is sparking??
Anything else that can be wrong?

I have checked the timing 3 times. But I can't get it to line up 100%...

Any suggestions??

If youve moved the problem by moving coils around. Then its more than likely a coul issue.

I hope it's a coil also, but the mechanic is not shure. New coil is on its way.

Can it be something with the timing??

Do a compression test to eliminate internal problems is what I would do first.
Was there any misfire issues on the old engine with the coil pack conversion done ?

Brand new short block?!
Coil conversion was done after short block change.

short motor may be new but what about the heads ie valve's making a good seal on the seats, valve clearances within spec, cam timing correct etc etc.

If you have good and even compression across all four cylinders, then you can eliminate this from the fault diagnosis process.

If you are sure the engine is mechanically sound, then ignore the above and then start chasing duff spark plugs, coil packs, wiring problems, poor earths, leaking injectors seals etc etc.

Update:

Got a new coil, tried it out today. No difference!
Then I found out that today that cylinder nr 3 is also not working. So now the car runs on 2 cylinders only?! What????

Probably been running on 2 since the problem started. But can it be? Double checked the wiring were I bypassed the igniter and it's all good.

I will get a compression and leak test on Monday.

Any ideas??

Are the two cylinders not running on the same bank? As if so could be a head or head gasket issue.

By bank you mean same side? The answer is no. It's one on the left side and one one on the right.

It's sorted now. The mechanic had put the wrong wires at the wrong coil...
The car has been soldered and wired too many times.. So the color of the electric wires arE fu....

Thanks for all the help. Now hopefully being mapped next month.
