ICE suggestions please

Picking up a new MY02 WRX at the weekend (my first ever Scooby) and will be looking into the sound system in the first couple of weeks.
I'm not looking for anything too outrageous or expensive (so no huge subs or amps etc) but just a decent upgrade to the standard system.
What can people recommend for the head units - should I be looking into a replacement double din unit or convert to single? What speakers can are suitable replacements for the standard ones without having to modify the housings?
General advice/tips would be welcome.
Thanks

Depending on where you live...
In Guildford there is a company called Ian Bannings that have done ICE in Scoobs for a while now and complete set-up in an MY01 4 door (mine) and an MY02 5 door (DrEvil).
I went without the sub because I need to keep the **** in the boot as free as possible.
I have an:
Alpine single DIN head unit (MD).
Pioneer Duel-mag component speakers in the front door (did need an MDF coller but they are thin as you can get and there is the smallest of gaps between the speaker and window).
Alpine 6x9 Type R speakers. These have been mounted in the parcel shelf.
Two Kenwood amps to power the front and back speakers.
Alpine 6 CD changer.
The speakers in the rear doors have been disconnected.
Obviously this more than you want to do at the moment but it at least shows what ou can do to get a good sounding system with good base and no sub.
I noticed a massive difference with the head unit change, when I saw the Subaru speakers I was amazed at the quality or the lack of!

Just wanted to say that the 6x9s needed the parcel shelf (metal bit to be cut to allow them to fit. In this way the speakers are comepletely hidden from view.
The amps are mounted on the rear seat, either side of the ski hatch.

Thanks, certainly sounds like it going to be worth doing something pretty quickly. I think speakers and a head unit upgrade first and whatever else the car audio shop can do for me.
Anyone with any recommendations for suppliers in the North West (Blackburn'ish)

I wouldn't cut metal in the shelf myself - a popular solution seems to be to hang 6x9s under the shelf rather than sitting them in. This way means that you're not affecting the structural integrity of the car...
Have you seen the FAQ? There's some useful stuff in there, though I may be a bit biased
Cheers,
Nick,
