Hissing sound from speakers
#1
Hi,
Just wired up my Amp (had it 2mths already ). With the dark nights and no garage/good lighting to work under, I've only wired up the drivers-side speaker (Infinity 605cs's).
Everything sounds fine, but there's an annoying hissing sound coming from the speaker (noticeably the tweeter).
Tried with the ignition off and it's still noticeable. Power cables are down the passenger-side of car and speaker cable down drivers-side, so don't expect that's causing it. Also, RCA cables are all down the centre console well out the way from the power.
It's only noticeable from the amped speaker. The rears and the passenger OEM ones are OK.
Any suggestions on where to look first?
Stefan

Start unplugging things. Unplug the RCAs from the amp. If it still hisses, it's something to do with either the amp's installation or the speakers, but I'd look accusingly at the amp at that point. Check grounding.
If that ain't it, plug the RCA back in at the amp and disconnect from the head unit. If it's there, perhaps the RCAs or head unit are the trouble. I've had an RCA fail on me and make a lot of hissing noises - you'd not believe a piece of cable could fail...
Have a go at those, and let us know what you find

Thanks Nick.
I really don't want to start taking the car apart again if it's a duff cable
I'll try a few things tonight and let you know how I get on.
Stefan
P.S. I think I'll just hand the car over to an installer next time and let them deal with these sorts of hassles.

I'll check the easy bits first this afternoon.
I'm wondering if this ICE install of mine will ever end. At least I'll have the experience if I ever do it again; or maybe hell will freeze over first

Nick,
Is it worth running a lead from the battery ground to the amp rather than using the rear seat bolts?
Going to do the earthing mod for the engine bay and wondered if it's worth running an extra cable for the amp.

Hiya
Sorry to (possibly) disagree with the moderator, but hissing isn't usually an earthing problem. Okay, fair enough, whining noises are DEFINITELY earth-related, but hissing is usually a signal problem.
It's probably worth checking the gain on your amp, before you go hareing off, checking all the cables. If the gain is way up then the amp will boost whatever signal it can find which, when the volume is low, is just background hiss. Try winding all the amp gains as low as they can go, and see if the hiss disappears.
Good luck either way

Or the other way round, if the amp gains are too low then its boosting a signal that is already in effect quite loud from the hu - and with background noise. I'd definately check your gain settings first. Or you've got a snake in your car.
