I've been demo'd a very nice incar dvd player thingy by my local dealer.

The thing is - i can't see the point of it :0

Its nice - but don't you prefer sitting in your house watching telly rather than sitting in the car to do the same????

Anyone who has one want to convince me its not just "a toy"???

IMHO - only of any use with seatback monitors and cordless headphones to keep the kids quiet.

dvd player built into sat nav, so there anyway. pay an extra £50 and it can play films.

tv cant be used on the move. electronically it works, but reception not worth doing.

IS useful when you are sitting waiting to pick someone up.

Plus having a screen in the dash board and a 12v power supply, enables people like pat to build you funky graphics devices for running skyline type systems on the screen.

As adam says - plus I've got a PC in my car, and that's going to be doing the Skyline thang

All ice is basically a big boys' toy; afterall, if you were a total music buff you wouldn't spend hundereds of pounds on stereo you know is never going to sound as good as home stereo, now would you? To single out dvd as a toy alone i think is missing the point; afterall, if a fantastic system was essential, why don't manufacturers ship cars with it as standard? It's just that some of us like more toys in their cars than others..

Also handy if you are going to be out in the car taking the missus shopping and the rallying is on TV on the way back. She drives, you watch telly

DVD and tv in car is fun, and yes a toy, but with sat nav it kind of bridges the gap in quality between impreza and E46 M3, by giving you a retro fit luxury.

Am a complete hifi buff no question.

Gave up on car audio some time back! it is pointless attempting to achieve sound quality.

If you just want to tinker then fair enough but as far as I am concerned the finished install is a waste of time and effort.

...that's quite possibly why I never get around to finishing my install

Thanks guys.. except Mr McDonut at the end...

Not sure i agree with Si.t.. In car hi fi can be listened to at ALL TIMES WHEN DRIVING.... so its good VFM if you spend time commuting as i do.

Never realised you could tie the screen in with Sat Nav.. i'll look into that - thanks guys!

jza,

dont mean to be stupid here, but how else can you fit sat nav?

surely you realised that all the modern tv screens run on some kind of data bus meaning the whole systems are interconnected?

the pioneer system is relatively new, but the vdo dayton and alpine systems have never not worked like that.

Some of th cheaper systems provide you with a separate screen as a easier route in to providing sat nav.

In the case of the pioneer, all equipment is databussed, and you simply add an extra component into the ring.

The main control unit has multiple inputs and screen control outputs so you can connect ancillary screens in the rear of your head rests. if you want you can allow one kid to play ps2 and the other x box.

Again I think the whole console in the car thing is super weak to coin a cartmansim.

If you check with Nick he will alert you how heavily I was into car audio. My last proper headunit was the top becker mexico from the days when becker was a decent name and it cost me about £1200. It was then that as I say above I gave up trying to achieve hifi.

I used to detest the likes of pioneer, as it tried to appeal to people with funky displays and gadgety crap. I preferred simplistic design which didnt appeal to thieves.

Giving up was one of the best moves.

I bought a gimicky tv screen as it was kinda cool, and reconnected my rear speaks (sorry nick ) for convenience of people sitting in the back and also extra volume.

I still have my amp, but am fighting myself not to sell it. It only adds eight as far as i am concerned, but will cost money to in time to remove.

ZX450 anyone?

anyway, for the price I got selling the becker, I was able to buy a complete tv system which chucked sound quality out of the window and gave me a gimmicky toy. Am now happy in that place!

Have since used the existing infrastructure and the fact that a good friend works in house for pioneer to get me cheap extra gear, like new dvd screens, and dvd sat nav, again for just another toy.

I havent even been empted to go back to sound quality, but more gadgets and hgimmick s is getting less appealing now. In my quest for unltimate performace I really want to shift all unnecesary weight, but cant bring myself to remove what is a beautiful install. It took me so much time to "plumb" it properly, and every component is invisible, it would almost be a crime to remove it.

Tell you what Adam, I'll uninstall it and you can take the labour charge off what you charge me for the amp
