Question

Hi all

A mate at work has asked me to fit a Sony CD-Tuner (not sure what model it is, although its new) into his 1998 Vauxhall Astra (new shape). It has the standard Philips CAR 400 Radio Cassette in it at the moment.

The guy in the shop where he bought it said that it would just be a simple matter of removing the standard stereo and plugging in the Sony without needing any adapters etc. becuase the Vauxhalls wiring loom has ISO connectors and so does the Sony.

Just wondering if this is really the case and if so would it be OK to just unplug the original stereo and plug in the Sony? I don't want to do this unless I'm totally sure.

Thanks in advance,

Gavin

I had an old shape astra (L reg) and that came with ISO connectors, so you should be laughing.

The new shape astra does have a separate display as part of its OEM radio - this is just on a flying lead tho. Don't connect that lead . If you want it to work, you may be able to get a display adaptor if you must - certain kenwoods can do this...

The only thing that might have you cursing is getting the old stereo out. Mine had grub screws in the standard holes that you use to get a stereo out, and the allan key that fits these is tiny. Check that you'll not have the same trouble and if you have, be prepared

Thumbs up

Cheers Nick

So I can assume its just gonna plug straight in and power up? Thats what I was thinking but just wanted to be sure, don't wanna fry anything!

As for the grub screws, you're right. There seems to be one in each hole.

Thanks again

Gavin

You're unlikely to fry anything ( don't quote me on this!!! )

In my experience a small supply of fuses will be necessary though!!

I've a feeling that some vauxhalls have the switched / permanent 12V wires crossed over in the iso connectors. Not sure about the new astras, i left the ice alone in mine.

I've asked my mate for confirmation; he's swapped the stereo in his. Will let you know.

John, you're absolutely right - I had the same troubles with my astra but completely forgot about 'em.
