BBC & DAB problems
#1
Hi - Hoping one of your guys can help here...!
I've fitted a Woodstock in my Scoob a while back and I am pretty happy with it other than 1 thing. When using DAB on the BBC ensemble it constantly drops the signal every couple of minutes or so - all other ensembles its fine? When I say it drops the signal, I'm not talking about its going out of range, just a break in reception. It happens even when the car isn't moving!
Anybody got any ideas? I've tried every possible setting from the manual and it makes no difference.
Cheers
Rich

Mines silent for 90% of the time and then every so often I get 10 secs of signal....... Same problem but much worse.
I'm pretty sure it's down to BBC coming from different transmitters from the commercial ensembles and there being less of them or they're lower power.
There's a transmitter map on a webpage somewhere that shows coverage for BBC DAB and there's a big hole over my house. Typical. I guess there's one over Notts too. You could just wait for BBC to build more transmitters.
Are you using a glass mount aerial? I'm trying a roof mounted bee-sting aerial shortly, hopefully this will improve matters.

Thanks for that.
Mines a glass aerial, seemed to make no difference to the reception running around with the bit you stick on the inside of the window just flapping around on the back seat. Sticking the aerial on the window made no change as far as I could tell.
The BBC drop out happens all over the country when I'm driving around. never had 90% off though. I'm not sure its loosing the reception - when that happens on mine all the sounds turn to alien speak - if yours does it then you'll know what I mean!

I guess that must really p!ss you off having invested in DAB. And, there was a big advertising push on radio last summer as i remember for DAB. Is it just for BBC (and is this a genralisation, not specific to a particular dab model of manufacturer) - no other stations like Kiss, Capital etc are affected?

I have a woodstock and it works fine on the bbc ensemble (London Area), only difference is I went for the combined dab/fm roof mount aerial after hearing bad experiences with the glass mount jobbie. The only thing I noticed is that the sound level on Radio 2 is much lower than the rest.

Just got my bee sting aerial fitted but not tried it to much yet. It's definetly better but still not good where I am (Glos).
Interesting chat with with Blaupunkt man though. Apparently BBC have recently changed the way they transmit their DAB. Blaupunkt know about this and have a mod that they can make to the Woodstock to improve it. You need your dealer to send the unit back to Blaupunkt technical UK and they do something with it (sounds like a software upload to me) and send it back. This is for units made a few months ago, latest ones are pre-modded. It seems Blaupunkt are keeping it quiet, even from their dealers, and only volunteering to do it if you ask.
I've borrowed a loan headunit for now and mines gone off for the mod. I'll let you know if it has helped when it comes back, predicted approx 1 week. Fingers crossed......

Picked it up at 09:00 this morning and fitted it on the forecourt. The unit came with a sticker saying S/W U/G 24/02 so I'm going to confidently predict that what they've done is indeed a software update.
Initial impressions were not good. As it had lost all it's settings (not surprisingly) I had to tune in BBC Ensemble from scratch. All through Cheltenham it couldn't find BBC at all. Got on M5 and found it. Then drove all the way to west Swindon via Stroud without a single drop-out or fade!!
This is not my normal route to work though so I can't comment definitively on how much better it is. Because of this I was going to wait until tomorrow to report but as you've bothered me I won't.
I'm certain this is a significant improvement over before. Wherever I was before DAB would be OK for 3 or 4 miles at most before disappearing and coming back some 1/2 miles or so later. After 2 or 3 times I got fed up and went back to FM. This did not happen with the modded unit at all. If you live in a marginal reception area for BBC DAB and have a woodstock more than 6 months old or so (not sure of exactly when) then I'd say get this mod done.

*bump*
I have a problem with my DAB. (i've posted this on another thread, but its seems quite a few people in here have Woodstock experience)
Whenever I'm tuned into a DAB station, I get a small beep every 40 seconds or so. (the same type of beep that you get as a confirmation on the unit). This beep is loud enough to spoil the broadcast, as the sound drops out for about 1/3 of a second whilst it beeps. This happens on all DAB stations.
Does anyone have any idea how to get rid, please?
Thanks in advance.

I think its something to do with the local traffic/news/weather settings. I normally hear it when I switch th travel on - I've never got a travel announcement yet though!
Now the software has been upgraded on the Woodstock everything is how it should be.
