head unit amp Vs bolt-on amp (sound quality)
#1
Hi
Just wondering about the difference in quality when you buy a bolt-on car amp. I've just purchased a Kenwood PSW-9521 head unit and it;s made the OEM speakers on my MY95 sound alot better...and I've heard the amp will be very good when speakers upgraded....but, I have bought some infinity kappa components and I hear that to get the most out of them you need to amp them up...so, will I lose quality if I do this or will the RCA signal from the head unit be that good that the bolt-on amp will sound just as good but louder and more controlled ?
Appreciate any thoughts !
cheers
Alex

The amp in any head unit is always a relatively small part of the unit, really allowing joe public enough juice to listen to his tunes at an ok volume and quality.
If you're going to buy infinitys then it would be worth getting an external amp to do the job - i wouldn't be concerned about the signal loss in an rca unless you buy a really cheap one (look to spend about 20 quid on one)

Si nice one cheers, I was just a bit bothered about the fact that the amp in the kenwood is supposed to be very good, and an was wondering if an external amp will sound just as good...but just louder / more controlled...
The kenwood was around £500 RRP last year so I'm expecting alot of work has gone into the sound quality rather than volume, so I was just bothered that an external amp would not sound as high quality. Hope I'm wrong !

Any recommendations on where to the put the tweeters ? Some say in A-pillar trim...on my last scoob I put them in the door panel at the top near the air vents...sounded ok...

no probs. have a play with the tweeters; i've got mine behind the mirrors (focal components) and i like the sound to be fairly crisp, but not too bright. If you read around some will say place the tweeters near to the woofers, but i find that things like limbs and passengers tend to get in the way and muffle the sound - just try out different places.
