is an 8AMP wire good enough...
#1
when connecting an Alpine HU to the +ve battery terminal?
the power lead that is part of the Alpine 7894RB loom is the same gauge as an 8AMP wire, but it has a 20AMP fuse in it.
what ampage wire should I use when extending this to the +ve battery terminal? I'm thinking of using 8AMP wire.
cheers

the power cable on the Alpine loom has specific instructions to connect directly to the +ve terminal (this is to drive the amp, not the switch +ve)
as above, it is the same diam as an 8AMP wire, but, it has a 20AMP fuse in it.

Sorry, you've lost me here.
It recommends 8 AMP cable and has a 20 AMP fuse? That's just plain nuts.
If it's 8AWG cable, which as David says is around 5mm in diameter then I've never seen a head unit require this - however, the internal amp on this is 4x60W, which is a lot of juice... In which case you really do need 8AWG.

sorry to confuse you.
the alpine loom has a wire that says connect directly to the battery, it does not have any rating written on it, but it does have a 20AMP fuse in it. The gauge of this wire looks to be no bigger than an 8AMP wire. (but it is slightly thicker than the rest of the wires on the Alpine loom)
It is this wire that I am extending to the battery +ve.
having read the manual again, it does say use a 20AMP wire.
what does AWG mean?

AWG stand for American Wire Gauge (sic), and 8AWG corresponds to 8mm^2 or 60A current capacity. That's a lot bigger than you need for a headunit !
Eight amp current should be plenty for a normal headunit.

right, ignore that crap. the head unit has an amp in it that kick s out 4 x 60 watts. the reason you need a decent power supply at 20 amps is to ensure the wire won't melt/explode/turn into something nasty. all you have to do is get a wire that'll carry 20+ amps (about 3 quid from helfords) to ensure youre safe. If you're not using the internal, i wouldn't be so worried, but I have wired up my 7893 like this to make sure.
