Default Kenwood mask problem

I have a Kenwood mask head unit which has been working fine until yesterday. The mask swivels round as normal, but there is no display and none of the buttons work, including the on/off button.
Is there anything I can check, before taking it in for repair?
Thanks.

Question

Well, if it helps, my Sony with removable front stopped working last week, but was live, ie: it showed a green light when you removed/replaced the front.

There is a small "reset" button on the panel behind the mask, actually on the unit itself, not the mask.
I pressed it, and all was well again...........apart from all my settings were lost!

Check your manual for something similar.

Unhappy

I have a Kenwood 6080R with the manual mask system. They are prone to cable breaks between the mask and headunit. I had to replace mine a few weeks ago. I got the replacment from Auto Electrics in Swindon.

Thanks all so far. There is a reset button on the front which I have pressed. Hasnt cured the problem, but has now erased the radio station which I could previously listen to so all is now silent
I will try disconnecting the power later and see if that works. Failing that I guess the most likely is a a broken cable. Bruce - is it a fairly simple job to replace?

Cheers

Hi Paul. I believe it's only a few quid. A friend of a friend is manager of an audio place in Aylesbury. I should find out on Monday/Tuesday so will let you know.

Default kenwood mask problem

I have an old kenwood excelon unit (kdc-x711 w/ non-removable faceplate) and I had the same problem of no buttons working but sound coming from the playing CD. After I pressed the reset button, no more sound. The faceplate flips over with ignition on, but no more.

So I need to get a replacement ribbon? Is this a relatively easy install? One shop I talked to wanted $85 for labor plus parts.
Thanks much

Hopefully my ribbon is finally arriving today! It's coming from here - www.edworthys.co.uk, who are in Aylesbury. I dont know the exact price but it's about £15 + VAT. It looks as though it will be very easy to fit, but I wont know until next week, as my mate has my stereo and is away until then!

I took my headunit apart and it looked like a nightmare job!

I ended up sending it to a company in Croydon. It cost me £25 for them to replace the cable and they offered a warranty on their work as well. (The £25 included the cable, the labour to fit it and the return postage)

Sent it off on a Friday and it was back with me the following Tuesday!

I did the ribbon cable on my 5080R, it is a fiddly PITA job. Because of the connector it was £25+VAT for the cable. The wire that had gone on mine ment the display and buttons went dead in the only position where you could eject the CD
