Is there an MP3 unit that doesn't use CD's?

Dension and Neo (used to be called Mstation) both do a "changer" type thing and Dension also do a Hard Drive based head unit. I have had an Mstaion for about 3 years and it has served me very well.
Another option would be a DVD player that can do it, i got one off ebay that plays just about anything, even displays Jpegs! (on the seperate screen, isnt double din great )

Blaupunkt do several headunits that take mmc/sd cards. some can also record to them - dab53/dab54 can definitely do this. www.bluespot.co.uk appear to be the cheapest online, but I havent quite commited to buying one yet.
Another option is to use an apple ipod to store the mp3 files and interface to it. Again blaupunkt do an official ipod interface, but its not too clever as although the head unit charges the ipod and controls track selection etc, it doesnt know the track names, so you have to read them off the tiny ipod display.
alpine have a better solution - again ipod based, but the head unit integrates properly, getting all the artist, album and track names from the ipod and displaying them on the main headunit display - this means instead of having the ipod in a holster, it can go in the glove box. Currently the alpine interface only works with 2004 head units.
dension do 3rd party ipod interfaces for just about every other make of stereo available including factory fit units, but they have the same problems as the blaupunkt one plus I doubt they are endorsed either by apple or the stereo manufacturer.
for me I fancy dab, so when I get round to it, its going to be the blaupunkt route and then as I already have all my mp3 files on my ipod probably add the ipod interface.

You could also use an iPod with an in-car adaptor. Dension do one for most vehicles and Alpine now do their own iPod dock.
