Default Audio advice needed

Right ive bought a JVC KD-AVX1 which is 50 watts per channel, Ive also bought a JVC amp bridgeable 4 channel 520 watts 3/2 chn bridgeable. Its all gobbledeegook to me what i want to know is will the amp run 2 6x9s and a sub, should i run just a sub off the amp and if so what size sub should i get or should i just buy another sub and amp? Really dont understand all this.

you can only run 6x9s and a sub if the amp is powerful enough to do so its no good putting all 3 on a amp which cant power them the way i work everything out is by using the rms on the amp and comparing them to the speakers so if your amp is 50 watts rms and the speakers you are putting on are 90 watts rms the amp will be overloading its self so really you will need an amp which can take 100 watts rms to cope with the power ive got 2 1000 watt subs running at 300 watts rms each off a 1000 watt rms amp so thats 600 watt rms still **** loads of power left and its defning any probs give us a shout be glad to help cheers

Right the amp is 50 watts per channel but says 520 watts. I listen to all sorts of music not into really bassy boot shaking music though. Just want a nice clear sound.

Bridgeable 4-channel power amplifier with Max Power output of 520W. RMS rating of 4 x 50W into 4 ohms, with no more than 0.08% THD. 2 ohm stable (in stereo). Gold-plated RCA input terminals. Speaker level input terminals. Hi-Pass/Low-Pass crossover switch. Bass Boost. Variable input level 300mV-5V.

Thats the gobbledegook on the amp. The speakers in the car are pants and im going to upgrade them.I dont know what to go for though. Id rather stick with the size i already have which is whatever was put into a classic.

An amp will provide as much power as it can, according to the load and the volume **** setting (or the input level).

There's no problem running 90W 'speakers with a 50W amp etc.

Run the 6x9's off the amp plus a sub using the amp in 3 channel bridged mode, as has been suggested earlier.

It looks like the amp will provide 50W to each 6x9 (which is more than your HU will) and about 100W to the sub - so make sure the sub you get is rated for more than 100W rms.

I can't recommend a sub as I don't have one in my car (yet...)

well my mate has done this set up using a 5 chanel amp and it sounds pants i dont believe in running 4 speakers and a sub off one amp its the subs that drain all the power if you want clear sound do an individual set up ie 4 channel amp to suit 6x9s or components and a mono amp for your sub you will hear the diffrence im selling a mono amp by alpine 1800 watts and is 1000 watt rms and two type r subs 1000 watt i made the box by cloning it off original alpine box and made a doubler to fit in the back of a scooby

I'd suggest getting a decent sub and running it off your amp as above; if it's not enough you can always get another amp. If it is, you've saved yourself some dosh.

Don't forget that a 1000W amp is only twice as loud as a 100W one...

It's how the ear works; to hear sounds from a pin dropping to a jumbo jet taking off it operates logarithmically (spelling?).

To appear to sound twice as loud you need to go from 100W to 1000W (also from 10W to 100W etc.).

Unfair, but true.

Doubling the power to a loudspeaker just increases the output (sound pressure level) by 3dB, which does not sound twice as loud.

Like most things in life, it's a law of diminishing returns!

Ok i now have some 6x9s for the rear and a 400 watt amp to run the 4 speakers. I ll use the 500 odd one for my sub. Now what components will fit directly into my front doors on a Version 6 please?

you will have to use the same dimension as the standard ones as you may find the magnets hit the window glass and mark it which is why you will find some scoobys with lines down the windows any way i think you will find infinity speakers will fit and are good sound quality infact there is someone in here selling some

Most 'speakers need spacers to fit in the front doors without fouling the windows. The FAQ has some info.

Focal do slim ones, can't remember if they fit without spacers - maybe search here on focal?

Oh, and if you don't believe me you could always try asking someone else who knows what they're talking about

The FAQ has details of a few installs with rings. My only experience is with an 05 wrx, and even with 24mm of mdf rings in place the door cards still fit fine.

Sorry scooby191; I didn't mean to suggest you didn't know anything, just that some one else would no doubt confirm what I say.

you will only be able to run the a sub off a 2 ch amp if it has a tri-mode crossover, if it hasn't then you will have to use an after market external one.
best bet would be to use a separate amp for a sub, mono amps are made to power subs and use as good a quality combination as you can afford, i'd recomend JL Audio or Phoenix Gold.
just remember to make sure you get an enclosure the correct size for your sub or no matter how much power you put through it, it will sound crap and will prob blow up fairly quickly.
i got 9 years experience in the ICE industry will give as much advice as is needed,

have fun

fit 6.5" custom fit (only the mounting frame is different to a 6" speaker really)
you can get plastic door collars from autoleads which bolt straight on to the door where the old speaker sat then put your new speaker in that. what i did with mine was to fill the collars up with filler to make them stronger and to stop them vibrating, its worth putting Dynamat on the doors as well.
