Post Who makes the best iPod compatible units ?

Ive got a bit of cash coming my way and its already burning a virtual hole in my pocket. Ive read loads of threads from many people who swear by Alpine etc, but I want to know who makes the best units for using with an iPod.

I'm not bothered about fitting the unit etc as someone else will be doing this, and as for sound quality anything will be better than the airfix unit / housebrick fitted as standard, so I'm just interested in ease of use and operation whilst on the move.

I dont need to give the local gestapo any further reason to set their nice blue lights twinkling, so this is a big deal to me.

And any suggestion for good fitters in the Tyne & Wear area would be appreciated as my last thread on this specific point drew a complete blank.

Your thoughts please ladies and gentlemen.

I think all the iPod interfaces have their troubles, which leads me to believe it's the iPod itself which is somewhat to blame.

My only experience is with the Alpine, but I guess you don't want to hear that it sounds great and works great (as long as you use playlists)!

There's a car audio section in the forums at http://www.ipodlounge.com/ which (if you search or post there) could help you.

thanks ru', dont get me wrong, i DO want to hear about the units and how they sound / work, and I'm well aware of Alpines reputation, Ive had them in other cars. However in this case I am willing to sacrifice a small element of my usual requirements if the iPod operation is a piece of cake. I just dont want to be fannying on with complicated menus, whilst looking out for rozzers with radar guns. They like my car enough already. If the Alpine is the one everyone hangs their hat on Ive no problem with that, I just wondered if anyone had managed to do any back to back testing with any other makes to see how they square up. And now, I'll check out the lounge, I'd forgotten about doing it that way round. cheers

I'm very happy with my Pioneer AVH-P5700DVD, (6.5" flip out touchscreen). Just hook up the ipod, then the albums / playlists etc are all listed on the screen, and you just start it by touching the appropriate album / artist / playlist etc. Much like using the ipod interface itself.

iain, ive just found the AHVP5700 on one of the audio sites and Im not bloody surprised you are happy with it, it looks the dogs. Unfortunately it might be a little out of my price range as Im looking for speakers/amp/sub & HU to be purchased in one go. But it gives me something else to think about. Im goin to Autosounds today in Newcastle, I might just check it out. thanks
