Question

I'm after changing the standard Philips head unit in my MY97 Scoob (no surprises there then!) and the Pioneer steering wheel remotes look about the easiest to use. Has anyone got one of these fitted, and does the remote fit the Impreza steering wheel?

Cheers,
Alex

Hi Alexf

I have a Pioneer (KEH-9700) with steering wheel remote.

To answer you questions, 1. yes there are easy to use, 2. yes they are very easy to fit to Impreza steering wheel.

What model Pioneer have u got, because the infra-red senser is on the bottom left hand side on the 9700 and this can cause a problem because the steering wheel gets in the way of the infra-red signal. You may find the newer models have got has the senser positioned in a better place.

Having said that I haven't replaced the batteries for a while. I think I'll try that next.

You will have to try it, before you but it. I'm sure if you ask your local car audio shop if you can try it, they let you. I've if the sales guy tries it for you.

Cheers,

Chris.

As a side issue, has anyone ever modified one of the steering wheel remotes (pioneer or sony) to be usable with Alpine kit?

Alpine don't do a steering wheel remote which is a pain.

Alternatively, has anyone fitted a steering wheel remote from another car (eg Peugeot)?

Got DEH6100R CD/Tuner with steering wheel remote.
Remote is crap only works occasionaly when wheel is turned such that remote is closest to head unit.

Going to get it changed soon but I think they all behave like that.

As above, I had one in my Rover 200(Flame suit on) and both my knees (I'm 6'4") and the steering column got in the way so the only way to effectively use it was to put on full lock, not really that effective on the motorway!

However, I swapped the system with a mate who installed it in his Citroen ZX 2.016v where it worked no problem.

I'd suggest borrowing one from a shop/owner and trying it out in a number of places on you wheel, when they work they are quite good and have the added bonus of being easily removable.

One thing I did notice was that when wearing a white T shirt it would bounce the signal off me but wouldn't do it if I was wearing dark clothing???

I've got a Sony which is hard wired at the moment so you don't have to worry about such baffling mysteries>

Thumbs up

Cheers for the replies everyone.

Has anyone had any problems fitting a Disklock over this or any other remotes, as I don't want to be knocking it everytime I park up.

Chris,
not too sure which model I'm going to have fitted yet - been quoted £500 fully fitted by Sextons in Manchester for the KEHP7900 with a 6 disc changer in the boot, but I'll ask them about trying the remote out first.

Hi all,
I have a pioneer steering wheel cotrol and I have had no problems with this!!
The soplok will fit over the remote and it is a lot better as it hides the control , so u do not have to take it off!!
Regards
G.
p.s e-mail me offline and I could show u, I live near Manchester.

Thanks for the offer greenking - I'm off work today so I think a trip to Sextons for a quick demo of this (and other) remotes is in order. I'll post results later.

If you didn't buy the 7900 at Sextons then I thought I'd tell you I have seen it with the 6 disc changer for £310 (N.I.C.E in Manchester, 0161 834 4550 - they look pretty cheap on all car hifi). I know this doesn't include fitting, but provided you can find some local who will do it for less than £190 you should save money!

I hope I haven't read this thread too late for you!

Thanks for the warning on the price - I've seen the adverts for N.I.C.E. and their prices are pretty good, especially when compared to those that advertise in Max Power.

After speaking to several installers I've been put off the idea of the steering wheel remote as none of them could guarantee that they would work correctly! The only remotes they could recommend was the Sony systems since the remotes are connected via a cable to the head unit.

The Scooby is now booked in at SQ Plus in Manchester next Monday to have an Alpine system fitted (TDA 7572 head unit plus CHA 1214 autochanger) cos the quality of sound is far better than everything else I have heard so far IMHO.

Thanks for all the feedback - I'll let you know how the new system sounds.
